Report: 7-Eleven Testing Fresh Food Concepts

According to a recent report from CNN.com, the 7-Eleven convenience-store chain is experimenting with units that offer a greater variety of fresh foods.

The tests are reportedly being conducted in a handful of stores in the Austin, Texas, area, where 7-11 locations are now offering fresh fruit, bakery goods and panini sandwiches.

The company’s CEO, Jim Keys, is reported to be a proponent of the concept, which has proven successful in Japan where purchases of such items account for approximately 40% to 45% of the chain’s total sales.

If adopted company-wide by 7-Eleven, a large-scale change-over to such units would probably take a few years, the story noted.
