Chain Update: McDonald's, Domino's And Others
A number of major chain restaurants have announced financial or operational news in recent days.
* McDonald’s reported its same-store sales results for the month, quarter and year that ended on Dec. 31, 2004. For the month of December, the chain’s global same-store sales increased by 4.9% compared to the year-ago period, with U.S.-based units reporting a same-store sales increase of 6.9%. For the quarter, McDonald’s posted a same-store sales increase of 5.1%. Same-store sales at domestic outlets during the quarter increased by 7.2%. For the full year, the chain’s global same-store sales increased by 6.9% compared to 2003, while U.S. same-store sales grew by 9.6%.
* Domino’s Pizza released its same-store sales results for the fiscal fourth quarter and full-year 2004. Domestic company-owned units reported a 2% decline in same-store sales for the fourth quarter compared to the year-ago period. Though no same-store results were provided for domestic franchised restaurants, the company’s same-store sales results for all restaurants fell by 0.2%. For fiscal 2004, U.S.-based company-owned stores increased their same-store sales by 0.1%, while domestic franchised restaurants grew their same-store sales by 2.1%. Total domestic same-store sales increased by 1.8% in 2004, while international same-store sales increased by 5.9% in constant currencies.
* Benihana announced a 5.3% increase in same-store sales for its fiscal third quarter, which ended on Jan. 4. The chain’s total consolidated restaurant sales for the period reached $49.6 million, an increase of 6.5% vs. the same period a year ago.
* Red Robin Gourmet Burgers released its preliminary results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year that ended on Dec. 26, 2004. The company forecasts revenue of $98.9 million for the quarter, up from its original forecast of between $97 million and $98 million. Red Robin’s same-store sales increased during the quarter by 6.7% compared to the year-ago period. For the full year, the chain said it posted revenue of $409 million. Same-store sales for 2004 increased by 7.5% vs. 2003.
