NRA Index Posts February Gain

The National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Performance Index increased by 0.3% in February. It now stands at 102.1.

The index is based on a survey of U.S. foodservice operators. It consists of two main portions: the Current Situation Index and the Expectations Index, both of which grew in February.

The Current Situation Index increased by 0.5% to 100.6 during the month. Driving this increase was operators’ same-store sales results. Fifty-four percent of surveyed operators reported higher same-store sales in February 2004 vs. the same period a year earlier, while 30% reported a same-store sales decline. In January, only 46% of respondents posted higher same-store sales, while 36% reported a drop.

February’s Expectations Index increased by 0.2% to reach a level of 103.6%. Operators’ same-store sales forecast remained basically steady, with 63% projecting higher same-store sales in six months vs. the 62% who made the same prediction in January. The percentage of operators who plan to make a capital expenditure on equipment, expansion or remodeling in the next six months remained steady at 63%.
