Chain Update

McDonald’s and Brinker International are among the restaurant chains that announced significant financial or operational news.

McDonald’s reported that its domestic same-store sales increased by 3.2% in August vs. the year-ago period. The burger giant’s same-store sales in Europe grew by 3.6% during the period. McDonald’s system-wide same-store sales increased by 3.4%, while system-wide total sales grew by 4.4% in constant currencies.

Brinker International reported that its total same-store sales for the four-week period that ended on Aug. 31 increased by 3.2% vs. the year-ago period. Same-store sales at Chili’s increased by 4.8%, while Maggiano’s same-store sales grew by 3% vs. the year-ago period. Same-store sales fell by 1% at Macaroni Grill and by 0.5% at On The Border.

Yum! Brands announced that its domestic same-store sales for the four-week period that ended on Sept. 3 increased by 2% compared to the same period a year earlier. Same-store sales increased by 6% at Taco Bell and 4% at KFC, while declining 4% at Pizza Hut.

Europe-based Toastissimo Café opened its first U.S. restaurant, located in Orlando, Fla. The chain said it hopes to open more than 300 units in the United States over the next five years.
