Chain Expansion Report

Chili’s and Mel’s Diner announced plans to grow their networks.

  • Chili’s Grill & Bar franchisee Bonnaroo Restaurant Group, based in Athens, Ga., acquired six company-owned restaurants in its home state and in South Carolina, and plans to open 14 more in the two states, per an agreement struck with the chain’s parent company, Brinker International. Acquiring the restaurants was part of a goal to develop the metro areas of Columbia, S.C., Myrtle Beach, S.C., Charleston, S.C., and Augusta, Ga., after developing non-metro parts of those states as a result of a 2004 agreement.
  • Mel’s Diner, a Southwest Florida chain, announced plans to add three locations to its existing 10 within the next 18 months. The new locations include: Sarasota, Fla., which the company expects to open early this year; Cape Coral, Fla., later this summer; and Naples, Fla., in 2007.
