The NRA Releases Promising Restaurant Performance Index for January

According to the National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Performance Index for January, restaurant activity showed a composite score of 102.3, a 0.3 percent increase since December, and the highest level in 13 months. Sixty-five percent of restaurants plan to make a capital expenditure for equipment, expansion or remodeling during that period, also the strongest level in 13 months.

For the period between January 2005 and 2006, 58 percent of restaurants reported a gain in same-store sales, and 51 percent reported increases in customer traffic. This marks the 30th consecutive month where operators reported an increase in same-store sales, according to the NRA.

In addition, 61 percent of restaurants expect their sales volume in six months to be higher than it was during the same period the previous year, while 13 percent of operators expect sales to decline. In terms of economic conditions, 43 percent of operators expect them to improve during the six months, while 10 percent said they expect conditions to worsen, and 47 percent expect them to remain the same.
