Stocked with exclusive, newly gathered information on our top 100 traditional dealers' size and structure, key achievements, challenges and objectives, as well as up-to-date sales figures, the 2003 Distribution Giants report details distributor performance during the most challenging year in a decade.
This year's Distribution Giants report features a new format, new information and was compiled using a methodology different than that employed during recent years. To accomplish our goal of creating up-to-date and more accurate profiles of the Top 100 traditional dealer Distribution Giants, members of FE&S' editorial staff personally contacted firms, including those ranked in our 2002 listings and others previously not included.
What we found out (besides the fact that a few leading dealers continue to want to fly "under the radar" and not divulge any corporate information) was that the majority of our Top 100 confronted the challenges posed by the economy in 2002 by working to improve their most important internal practices and departments. (You can check out these initiatives in the "Top Achievements of 2002" section of our new profiles.) Merger and acquisition activity, on the other hand, was rarely reported by our survey respondents, and fewer still indicated that they anticipate buying or joining up with other dealerships during this year. This speaks not only of the unpredictability of our current political and economic circumstances, but also of dealers' desire to control costs and resource use more closely in order to attain necessary competitive advantages.
Overall, our Top 100 dealers accounted for slightly more than $3 billion in total sales in 2002, up from just under $3 billion in 2001. Nonetheless, as a review of our Top 100 dealers' individual 2001 and 2002 sales figures will reveal, an unusually large number of respondents reported revenue decreases for last year, reflective of the generally tough times our industry has recently been experiencing. Will dealer (and broadliner) sales increase by a similarly modest percentage this year or will war, shaky consumer confidence and continuing overcapacity cause an actual sales decline? Although current conditions remain so uncertain as to preclude an accurate projection, you can rest assured that next year's Distribution Giants report will provide the most accurate financial scorecard, as well as exclusive insights into dealers' size, scope, challenges and objectives.
